Everyday Life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

Morning

The Prophet pbuh’s everyday life begins before the sun rises every morning. Upon hearing the Subuh azan,he would perform a sunnah prayer at home. Then, he would make his way to the mosque to lead the Subuh prayer.

After the prayer, the Prophet pbuh would recite zikirs appropriate for that particular time of the day. Only later, would he turned to the Companions and talked to them. The topic of discussion ranges from complex questions about the Faith to the solving the daily problems of the Companion. We can easily see here how the Prophet had formed a Circle of Worship followed by the Circle of Knowledge and Culture so early in the morning. This ensures that a Muslim’s life begins not only with the act of worship, but also the opportunity to gain more knowledge.

Once he had performed the Dhuha prayer, the Prophet pbuh would then head home. He would ask his wife what is for breakfast. His usual breakfast consisted of humble food like milk, dates and a few slices of barley bread. However, if no food is available at home, he would simply say “I’ll be fasting today”. We can point out how patient and understanding the Prophet pbuh was. He never made a demand for better food to be served. He didn’t even complain if there wasn’t any food served.
He will then have a short nap whilst waiting for the Zuhur prayer.

Noon
Again, the Prophet would head the Zuhur prayer. If it was a Friday, the solat will be celebrated with joy, like a holiday. The Companions will come to the mosque much earlier than usual. Nails would be cut, a bath taken, new clothing put on, fragrances rubbed on. Even the women and children would attend the prayer. The Prophet would then deliver a sermon and they would later pray.
The Prophet did not usually have an afternoon meal. Actually, an afternoon meal is not mentioned regularly in reference sources. It is safe to say that the Prophet only had 2 meals every day -a morning and an evening meal.

Occasionally, Prophet Muhammad would visit the Companions, undertake daily tasks, see to issues of interest to the public as ruler, dictate revealed verses to scribes of revelation, inform the people of urgent commands by means of proclamation and attend to guests. For example, after the eighth year of the migration, there was heavy visiting by ambassadors. Part of the day passed in meeting and hosting them, answering their questions and requests and seeing them off.

Afternoon
The Prophet put a strong emphasis on the importance of the Asar prayer. This is because during the Asar prayer, the changing of the guard of the night and day Angels occur. As such, the zikir after the prayer would always be made longer.

There was a custom the Prophet usually kept: He would visit his wives after every afternoon prayer and ask how they were and what their needs were. In these customary visits his wives would offer the Prophet whatever they had with them.

Evening
The Prophet often began to wait for the evening prayer before the sun set, and as soon as the azan was recited, he would immediately stand before Allah. After the Maghrib salat, he would pray 2-6 rakaats of the Awwabin salat.
After the evening prayer the Prophet would gather his family together in the home of whichever wife he was going to spend the night with, and he would begin a family talk.

Night
The Prophet would lead his Companions in the night prayer and, if there was no other important situation, he would retire to rest without speaking to anyone. Before he slept, he would pray.

Aisha relates the prayer and practice of the Prophet before he went to sleep: "Every night when the Prophet went to bed, he would join both hands, blow onto them, and recite Ihlas, Falak and Nas surahs; then he would touch every part of his body that he could reach, beginning with his head, and he would repeat this three times.

Late night
The last portion of the Prophet Muhammad's day, nighttime, was passed with a great deal of worship. As narrated by his wife, Aisha:

"Our Prophet would pray at night until his feet were swollen. When it was said, ‘Hey, Messenger of Allah! Allah has forgiven your past and future sins. Why do you force yourself to worship so much in spite of this?' he would answer, ‘Should I not be a grateful servant for this blessing of Allah?'"

Prophet Muhammad would rest a while after the tahajud prayer and get up for the morning-prayer at the call of the muezzin. Bilal would call the adhan before imsak, thus waking people for both suhoor and tahajud. Abdullah ibn Ummi Maktum would make the call to prayer when imsak began, indicating that the time for morning-prayer had begun.

Secret of dates

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) gave a special attention for Dates as part of the believer’s diet especially during the Holy month Ramadan. Allah Almighty mentioned Palm trees many times in the Quran, and made it the food of the dwellers of Paradise. What are the secrets of dates? Is it possible to think of using dates as remedy for some diseases? What do scientists of today say about dates?

Dates are one of the most nourishing fruits and sometimes called “Bread of Desert”. More than two third of dates’ weight is natural sugar. The ancient Egyptians considered dates as a symbol of fertility, while the Romans and the Greeks used it to ornament their stately triumph pageants.

Dates and the Prepartum period

Dates stimulate the uterus by regulating its contractions which facilitate delivery. The uterus is a relatively large muscular organ and it urgently requires an adequate supply of natural sugar during labor and delivery. Being laxative, dates are essential for pregnant women before delivery in order to purge the colon and intestine and to facilitate delivery. The Quranic verse shows evidently as Allah tells Mary:

And shake the trunk of the palm tree towards thee – thou wilt cause ripe dates to fall upon thee ~ Mariam:25

Nutriment and medicine for children

Dates contain natural sugar which is easily absorbed and digested thus; it is safe and comforting for children’s stomach and intestine. Dates and honey is used for treatment of diarrhea and dysentery in children.
Here, we should mention the prophetic tradition of (Al Tahneek); rubbing the newborn’s mouth with a well-chewed date and feeding him with it. Science has proved that giving the newborn some sugar dissolved in water provides the child with the necessary nutrition and improves their immunity against diseases.

An effective treatment for constipation

Dates can be used in the treatment of intestinal disturbances and it also help intestine perform their function effectively. Dates are also highly beneficial in the treatment of constipation as the roughage stimulates sluggish bowels.

A Treatment for Obesity

Treatment by eating few dates when feeling hungry helps reduce hunger and be filled. Dates will provide the body with the necessary sugar and stimulate the intestine which reduce hunger and eventually reduce food consumption. As the prophet said:

A household that has dates doesn’t feel hunger. ~ narrated by Muslim

A Remedy for Inflammations

Dates juice could be used in the treatment of sore throat, various types of fever, rhinorrhia and common cold.

A Remedy for Intoxication

Dates are an excellent remedy for alcoholic intoxication. In such a case, drinking water in which fresh dates have been rubbed or soaked will bring quick relief. One of the prophet’s (PBUH) Hadith in which he referred dates as a remedy for intoxication.

Who eats 7 pressed dates in the morning, will not be inflected with witchcraft or poisoning that day. ~Narrated by Abu Daud

White eyed prophet

وتولى عنهم وقال يا أسفي على يوسف وابيضت عيناه من الحزن فهو كظيم

“He turned away from them, saying, "I am grieving over Joseph." His eyes turned white from grieving so much; he was truly sad.” (Quran 12:84)

Whiteness, which is termed as cataract, is loss of lens transparency whether it is partial or complete opacity of the eye lens that prevents the entry of light. It is a degenerative condition and may be due to:
·         Decreased glutathione (antioxidant) content in the lens. Thus the accumulated oxygen radicals change the membrane permeability to water and ions as in senile cataract.
·         There is denaturation and coagulation of the lens proteins with deposition of calcium salts.

Cataract is treated by surgical removal of entire lens and replaced by powerful convex lens in front of the eye or artificial implanted lens inside the eye.

To my surprise, the treatment of cataract is mentioned in the same surah (Yusuf) -WITHOUT SURGERY.

(إذهبوا بقميصي هذا قألقوه على وجه أبي يأت بصيرا وأتوني بأهلكم أجمعين)

“Go with this my shirt, and cast it over the face of my father: he will come to see (clearly). Then come (here) to me together with all your family.” (Quran 12:93)

فلما أن جاء البشير ألقاه على وجهه فارتد بصيرا قال ألم أقل لكم إني أعلم من الله ما لا تعلمون))

“Then when the bearer of the good news came, He cast (the shirt) over his face, and he forthwith regained clear sight. He said: "Did I not say to you, 'I know from God that which you know not?” (Quran 12:96)

Note that the prophet's cataract healed when his is eye is casted with prophet Yusuf's shirt, through a revelation from Allah. This inspired Dr Abdul Basit Muhammad, an Egyptian scientist to study how can this be possible. What could be there in the shirt of Yusuf until it can cure cataract without surgery?!

Finally he came at decision that nothing except sweat could be on it. He began to search the components of sweat. He immersed lenses extracted from cataract surgery in sweat. He found out that a state of gradual transparency is established in these opaque lenses.

The second question was: are all sweat components effective in such a case or is it only one of its components?  He later realized that one of its main components was the urea (Goandin), and which could be chemically prepared. Results of investigations on 250 volunteers revealed removal of cataract and restoration of sight for more than 90%.

Allah the Almighty said; “And We send down, of the Quran, that which is a healing and a mercy to the believers.” (Quran 17:82)

( وننزل من القرآن ما هو شفاء ورحمة للمؤمنين)  الإسراء 82

Wallahu’alam.

Feverlicious

Assalamulaikum w.b.t.

For those of you who have had Patho Physiology class, you are bound to have learned about FEVER.It is actually one of the topics learned during the second semester, just before the exam. Regardless of the fact whether you know the scientific reason behind this natural bodily response or not, every single one of us had experience this physical phenomenon at one point of our life or another.

I won’t bore you with the all the scientific jargons to explain the mechanism of how fever develops in our body, we all have textbooks for that. The main idea is when you have an infection of any kind, be it bacterial, viral or fungal, your body will respond by releasing a bunch of different chemicals that causes your body temperature to rise. The main idea is that once our body temperature rises well above normal, all these bacteria, and viruses are literally burned alive. They can’t survive at a temperature higher than the normal body temperature.

So, basically fever is actually a defense reaction of our body .Despite all the discomfort and pain that comes along with it,it’s actually a small price to pay since fever helps us to get rid of different infections. You can say that fever is actually a blessing in disguise. Just because it’s uncomfortable, don’t simply dismiss it as being a bother. Infact ,the Prophet s.a.w had once said

Do not curse a fever because it abolishes sins like fire abolishes dirt from iron. [Ibn Maajah]

Actually, this hadeeth explains fairly well about how fever helps our body to get rid of infections. Scientifically speaking, after the thermoregulatory center in the hypothalamus are affected by different pyrogens, our body temperature rises as the normal value of the body temperature is reset. At the same time, different cytokines are released and these in turns activate different leucocytes in our body, to help us combat infections of any nature.  It’s just way too hard too hard to explain a scientific process using layman terms.

We all know how uncomfortable a fever can be. We are all familiar with the chills, sweating, headache… the list goes on and on. Doctors will prescribe feverish patients with antipyretics (drugs that can decrease fever). Some well-known antipyretics include Paracetamol, Aspirin and several other NSAIDs. Most are effective to lower our body temperature and helps to get rid of the terrible headache and muscular pains that comes along with the fever. But, there are always the problem of side effects and ineffectiveness. Take Aspirin for example, people with tendency for GIT bleeding can’t take them, also it is contraindicated in children. Sometimes, for some unexplainable reason, antipyretic fails to bring a fever down. So, what do we do in this case?

Let’s see what the Prophet s.a.w has to say about lowering the body temperature in fever..

“Fever is coal from hell, get rid of it by using cold water.” [Ibn Maajah]

I’m sure most of us are familiar with Cool-Fever. If you haven’t had any personal experience of having it placed on your forehead, I’m sure you’ve come across the TV commercial at one time or another. To tell you the truth, I don’t know how cool fever works actually, my guess is, there should be some chemical substances inside that react with one another and absorbing heat at the same time. The basic thing is, it’s the cold sensation that helps to bring the temperature down.

Also, if you’re a big fan of medical tv series like House MD or Greys Anatomy, you’re bound to have watched an episode where they put patients inside a tub filled with ice cubes trying to bring their fever down. Long story short, what I’m trying to say is that all the things that the Prophet said about fever is totally true. Yes, we are currently living in a modern world, where people believe that everything can be explained and solved scientifically. Yes, that is partially true. But, always remember that there’s always a limit to science, just like any other man-made ideas. When science fails to explain something, it doesn’t hurt to actually hear what our religion has to say about it.

Islam is a way of life. It is Syumul-meaning it covers the whole aspect of our life. Whenever in doubt, just refer to the Quran and Hadeeth. There’s bound to be an explanation there.

wallahualam
